PISCO EXPEDITION

Nevado Pisco (5,752 m) is known as “the balcony of the Cordillera Blanca” thanks to its incredible 360° panoramic views from the summit, including Huandoy, Chacraraju, and the mighty Huascarán. It’s one of the best introductory climbs for those seeking to step into the world of high-altitude mountaineering, combining accessible terrain with unforgettable scenery.

PREPARATION

Fitness

Good physical condition is required. The approach hike and summit day are moderately demanding, but accessible with proper acclimatization and determination.

Technical

Moderate. Features glacier travel with some crevasses and sections at 35–45° incline. Basic ropework and use of crampons and ice axe are necessary. Suitable for beginners under the guidance of a mountain guide.

5,752 m (18,871 ft) – summit elevation.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Drive to Cebollapampa & Hike to Base Camp (4,600 m)

Depart from Huaraz early in the morning and drive (~2.5 hours) through the stunning Llanganuco Valley to the trailhead at Cebollapampa (3,900 m). Begin hiking, first through grassy trails and then on steeper moraine slopes, reaching Pisco Base Camp (4,650 m) in 3–4 hours.
The afternoon is spent resting, hydrating, and preparing gear for the summit push.
🏕 Camp at Base Camp (4,650 m)

Start early (~1:00–2:00 AM). Hike to the glacier, rope up, and begin ascending moderate snow and ice slopes. After 5–6 hours of climbing, reach the summit with one of the most stunning 360° views in the Andes.
Descend carefully and return to Base Camp for a well-earned rest.
🧗 Climb time: 8–10 hours round trip
🏕 Overnight at Base Camp.

After breakfast, hike back down to Cebollapampa (2–3 hours), where private transport will take you back to Huaraz.
🚐 Arrival in Huaraz by early afternoon.
